Source Water Protection

If anything good can come from the inquiry into Walkerton's contaminated drinking water, it is that Ontario 's conservation authorities, municipalities and others will soon be able to better protect waters at the source.

Legislation governing source contamination is expected to be passed later this year. Over the last 10 years, Credit Valley Conservation supported by its partner municipalities has spent tens of millions of dollars to protect drinking water at source.

Given that water flows over and below our landscapes, the amount of water available and its quality is always affected by other influences, including climate, natural systems and human activities. Upstream events impact on downstream conditions.

Credit Valley will be working with its municipal partners and the province to develop a source protection plan for the Credit River watershed for the next several years that is relevant, scientifically sound and easy for the community to understand. The plan will ensure everyone will continue to have a sufficient supply of fresh, clean water for years to come.
