Natural Neighbourhoods in Fletcher's Creek, Brampton

Credit Valley Conservation is currently undertaking a study of the environmental health of the Fletcher’s Creek neighbourhood of Brampton. In concert with this research, CVC is reaching out to residents across Brampton with information and ideas to help grow naturally beautiful neighbourhoods.

Tips for a Natural Neighbourhood

Tip:  For a beautiful, healthy garden, choose native plants*

  • Make more space for nature. This season, expand your garden out a foot or two and fill the space with native plants.
  • Native wildflowers like Black-eyed Susan, Wild Bergamot and New England Aster are beautiful, and will bring your garden to life with visiting butterflies and hummingbirds.
  • Native plants are better adapted to Brampton’s local environment, and can thrive in our variable conditions with less fuss.

*what’s a native plant? Plants that have developed over hundreds - even thousands - of years to thrive in the local environment. For some easy-to-find, easy-to-grow choices, check out the shopping list.

Tip:  Get fantastic results with less fertilizer

  • Use the right amount - not too much - for a healthy, green lawn (never more than what is printed on the bag).
  • Fertilizing once a year is really all your lawn needs for best results.
  • For a natural fertilizer, leave your grass clippings on the lawn.
  • For garden areas, choose compost instead of chemical fertilizer.
  • Keep fertilizer on the lawn and off the sidewalk and driveway so it won’t be washed into the sewer.

Tip:  Use water-saving secrets to keep your yard healthy and happy – no matter the weather.

  • Don’t mow too low: Raise the blade on your mower a bit. Letting your grass grow a bit longer will strengthen the roots and help keep it green, even in dry weather.
  • Use a soaker hose rather than a sprinkler.
  • Use a rain barrel – you’ll have water when you need it, even in dry weather.
  • Choose a low-maintenance lawn seed mix that will look great with less water.
