WeCARE Spring Activities

WeCARE joined forces with the Environmental Advisory Committee of Erin for the annual Earthday Community Clean-up on Saturday April 22nd. Our group walked the Elora Cataract Trailway through Hillsburgh and managed to pick up enough garbage to fill a pickup truck – we found a little of everything from the usual pop cans and chip bags to wooden pallets and a toilet!

The following Saturday, with the help of Erin Scouting, we planted 750 seedling trees supplied by County of Wellington’s Green Legacy Program. The planting took place at Fairview Farm, just north of Hillsburgh. This was a location identified as a major regional recharge area in the characterization of the West Credit Subwatershed Study. It was a great spot to spend a windy day, protected by the hills of Hillsburgh.

Even the hills couldn’t protect our volunteers from the snow flying at Fairview Farm on the morning of May 6th. More local volunteers and staff members from Standard and Poors helped to install hundreds more potted trees and shrubs to complement the seedling trees.

WeCARE would like to thank all of the volunteers that have made our spring activities so successful and so fun!

2006 Peel Children's Water Festival

CVC had another successful year educating elementary school students at Heart Lake Conservation Area in Brampton, at the 2006 Peel Children’s Water Festival.

CVC’s activity, “Fishes of the Credit” provided children with the opportunity to learn about how different types of fish can help us determine the health of the river. Children also learned about the importance of keeping the river clean and healthy.

In addition to CVC’s activity, there were many other great activities available for students to explore. Most of the activities were developed by water specialists and educators to combine Ontario curriculum requirements with hands-on learning.

None of these activities would have been possible without the assistance of volunteers. CVC would like to extend a very big thank-you to all those who came out and helped to make the event such a great success.
