Spring Breakup 2006
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 10, 2006
Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) would like to remind all our watershed residents of the dangers that exist on our streams, rivers, ponds and lakes during spring break-up.
Spring is quickly approaching and we look forward to warmer weather and being outdoors. While we have experienced several melts this winter, we can still expect this spring to also bring us melting snow, rain and further break-up of ice along our rivers, streams, ponds and lakes. During this time of year we can expect higher, faster flowing water within our rivers and streams. In addition, slippery and unstable stream banks and extremely cold water temperatures can lead to very hazardous conditions close to any water body.
Please exercise caution around any body of water during this period. We at the CVC will continue to closely monitor river and stream conditions.
The cold weather that we have been experiencing, following a month long thaw in January, has resulted in the redevelopment of significant ice covers along most of our rivers and streams. With the snow melt from warming weather, the potential for flooding and ice jamming remains significant, should heavy rains also occur. At this time CVC would like to report that the majority of our watercourses particularly those in the southern end of our watershed remain open from any significant ice cover, however, conditions may change within the coming weeks due to changes in weather. CVC will continue to closely monitor ice, river and stream conditions.
Please exercise caution around any water body over the next few weeks and help make this a safe and enjoyable spring.
